Description:
Review by Scott Yanow This LP features a variety of great jazz players (the 1956 Metronome All-Stars) performing together. Count Basie's Orchestra plays their hit "April in Paris" with Ella Fitzgerald in what was the first meeting on records between Basie and Fitzgerald. "Everyday I Have the Blues" not only has the duo but Joe Williams, the orchestra goes solo on "Basie's Back in Town" and on "Party Blues" Basie and the two singers have fun with a small group taken from the big band. In addition George Wallington performs a piano solo ("Lady Fair") and a 21-minute "Billie's Bounce" has solos by an impressive assortment of individualists: trumpeter Thad Jones, altoist Lee Konitz, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims on tenors, clarinetist Tony Scott, baritonist Serge Chaloff, trombonist Eddie Bert, vibraphonist Teddy Cohen, guitarist Tal Farlow, pianist Billy Taylor, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Art Blakey. This would be the final recording by The Metronome All-Stars (a series that started in the late '30s) and the music on this LP still sounds exciting and joyful.
